Try Being 12 Again

Writer's picture: Steve MartinSteve Martin

“Too many people grow up. That’s the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up. They forget. They don’t remember what it’s like to be 12 years old. They patronize, they treat children as inferiors. Well, I won’t do that.” --Walt Disney

Has your vision of life changed since you were 12? How do you feel about that?

There were some great things about

being 12: the freedom, the dreaming, the imagining, the hopefulness, and the limitlessness of the future.

This is a great time of year to think back to when you were a child and try to remember what excited you about being alive and what your hopes and dreams were.

If those feelings have changed, when did that happen? Are you happy about it?

Your assignment: spend some time remembering what it was like to be 12. Where did you live? What grade were you in? What did you love to do? Who were your friends? What did you laugh about?

Now – do you want to bring some of that back into your life?

If so – do it.

I promise you – it’s not too late.

I’m still asking myself what I want to be when I grow up. I haven’t figured it out yet – but I still have time.
