"The highest levels of performance come to people who are centered, intuitive, creative, and resilient, what we call 'being in the positive emotional zone.' To be joyful is to ride the molecule of endorphins in this zone and make the most of life."—Alex Lickerman, M.D.
We often get caught up chasing after happiness, pouring over self-help books and articles for tips on cultivating more satisfaction with our lives. But the benefits of prioritizing joy instead are immense. Joy refers to feelings of intense positive emotion like delight, jubilation, and exhilaration. While happiness is a more sustained positive state, moments of joy create profound mind-body effects.
Research shows that experiencing joyful emotions can boost our immune function by 50% and protect our cardiovascular health. Regularly experiencing positive emotions like joy is associated with lower rates of cardiovascular disease and stroke and even increased longevity of 7-10 years. On a cognitive level, joy enhances our ability to think creatively, solve problems, and pursue goals by 30%. It allows us to savor the richness of the present moment rather than dwelling on the past or fretting about the future.
"Joy is not in things; it is in us." —Richard Wagner
So, how can we invite more of this potent mind-body resource into our lives? It starts with adjusting our mindset to relish uplifting experiences instead of negative self-talk and worst-case-scenario thinking. Make a conscious effort to appreciate small, seemingly insignificant delights - a breathtaking sunset, belly laughs with good friends, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Actively pursue hobbies, activities, and interactions that spark feelings of joy for you personally.
Another key is expressing gratitude, which amplifies and extends those positive emotions. Numerous studies have linked gratitude to higher joy, vitality, and optimism. Make it a daily practice to consciously acknowledge things you're grateful for, from life's biggest blessings to its littlest joys.
In many ways, joy is a muscle - the more we exercise it through feeling and expressing positive emotions, the stronger and more naturally it arises. It creates an upward spiral of more connected, vibrant experiences. So, open yourself up to more joy each day. Your mind, body, and spirit will flourish as a result.
