117 Things We Do for Our Clients Number 22 - Help Formalize Goals and Put Them in Writing

Person writing a list in a notebook with a pen.

Establishing written goals shares similarities with practices such as dieting, meditation, and budgeting, all of which have been extensively researched and proven to significantly impact our overall well-being. Despite being aware of the positive outcomes associated with these endeavors, many of us find ourselves resistant to engaging in them. It's a curious phenomenon how our own minds can sometimes act against our best interests.

One primary obstacle preventing individuals from setting goals is the perceived lack of urgency in the task. In our daily lives, we are often consumed by pressing matters – what time to arrive at a destination, handling routine chores, navigating through traffic – these are the so-called "C" tasks, as classified by time management experts. Meanwhile, the more vital but less urgent "A" tasks, such as drafting a will, shopping for insurance, setting up a retirement account, and articulating our goals, often take a backseat.

This is where guidance from a financial advisor can prove invaluable. Our expertise facilitates a structured process that prompts individuals to allocate time specifically for the critical task of setting written goals. Once these goals are documented, the need for constant attention diminishes. Astonishingly, our subconscious mind has the ability to retain these goals, subtly steering us towards their achievement, even if we choose to file them away and never revisit them.

The simple act of putting pen to paper and formalizing your aspirations can be a transformative step towards a better life. By giving importance to not-so-urgent but essential tasks like setting goals, our clients are taking a step toward a better future. Don't let the urgency of daily life overshadow the long-term impact of cultivating and documenting your goals – your future self will thank you for it.
